Jessie M. King learned the technique of batik-a method of fabric dyeing originating in Indonesia-while studying in Paris. She later wrote and illustrated a manual on the process, creatively framing it through the story of Cinderella, who uses batik to make her gown for the ball. King often used the technique in her own clothing and created scarves that were sold through Liberty.
